Lower bounds for sparse matrix vector multiplication on hypercubic networks

چکیده
In this paper we consider the problem of computing on a local memory machine the product y = Ax, where A is a random n n sparse matrix with (n) nonzero elements. To study the average case communication cost of this problem, we introduce four different probability measures on the set of sparse matrices. We prove that on most local memory machines with p processors, this computation requires ((n=p) log p) time on the average. We prove that the same lower bound also holds, in the worst case, for matrices with only 2n or 3n nonzero elements.

Communication Bounds for Heterogeneous Architectures
As the gap between the cost of communication (i.e., data movement) and computation continues to grow, pursuing algorithms which minimize communication has become a critical research objective. Toward this end, we seek asymptotic communication lower bounds for general memory models and classes of algorithms. Recent work has established lower bounds for a wide set of linear algebra algorithms (wh...
متن کاملPerformance Optimizations and Bounds for Sparse Matrix Kernels
Building high-performance implementations of sparse matrix-vector multiply (SpM×V), an important and ubiquitous computational kernel, is fundamentally limited by a variety of factors: the increasing performance gap between processors and memory, the storage and instruction overhead of manipulating sparse data structures, and the irregular memory access due to sparse storage. Moreover, the compl...

In this paper, we present our work on developing a new matrix format and a new sparse matrix-vector multiplication algorithm. The matrix format is HEC, which is a hybrid format. This matrix format is efficient for sparse matrix-vector multiplication and is friendly to preconditioner. Numerical experiments show that our sparse matrix-vector multiplication algorithm is efficient on
متن کاملAutotuning Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication for Multicore
Sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) is an important kernel in scientific and engineering computing. Straightforward parallel implementations of SpMV often perform poorly, and with the increasing variety of architectural features in multicore processors, it is getting more difficult to determine the sparse matrix data structure and corresponding SpMV implementation that optimize performan...
متن کاملTight Cell Probe Bounds for Succinct Boolean Matrix-Vector Multiplication
The conjectured hardness of Boolean matrix-vector multiplication has been used with great success to prove conditional lower bounds for numerous important data structure problems, see Henzinger et al. [STOC’15]. In recent work, Larsen and Williams [SODA’17] attacked the problem from the upper bound side and gave a surprising cell probe data structure (that is, we only charge for memory accesses...
